Scale (indicators, human scale)
Showing how big things are by anchoring them to people, props, and scale markers so viewers instantly judge size and usability.
What it is
Scale indicators are anything that tells viewers how big your design is: a human figure standing beside a mech, a door under a spaceship, a chair next to a creature. You place familiar objects or people near your design so viewers have something known to measure against.
Human scale is the most common anchor. A neutral, clearly drawn person standing beside your prop, vehicle, or environment lets art directors and 3D artists judge height, reach, and usability. The figure is simple and quiet so it doesn't compete with the design, but accurate enough that its height is believable.
On a finished concept sheet, scale information repeats in a few ways: a human figure tucked into multiple views, simple line silhouettes comparing sizes, and a height bar or ruler-style line with numbers. You're not decorating the page — you're making it impossible to misread how large or small the thing is.
In production, use a consistent reference height (for example, "this generic human is 1.8 m") across sheets, so a character, weapon, and vehicle can be compared at a glance. Your scale indicators line up cleanly with ground planes and perspective so they don't introduce confusion.
Why it matters
Without clear scale indicators, viewers guess. A tank might look like a toy or a skyscraper depending on the viewer. Design decisions that only make sense at one size — door placement, window spacing, handle thickness, step height — stop reading, and production teams can't tell if your ideas are buildable. Good scale communication turns your images from cool illustrations into usable designs modelers, level artists, and clients can trust and act on.
