Measuring depth and scaling objects in depth
Placing objects at convincing distances so their size, spacing, and overlap shrink correctly as they recede in perspective.
What it is
This is judging how big something should be at a given distance, then drawing it at that size. The same chair, box, or figure should be much larger near the camera than far down the street, and that change must follow the perspective setup you chose.
You use vanishing points and the horizon to check depth. Align object tops and bottoms to the same ground plane, follow lines back to the vanishing point, and see where a copy of that object would land farther away. Overlap and height relative to the horizon tell you which object is in front, and by how much.
This shows up when you place characters and props on a floor, furnish a room, or line trees along a road: if the first tree is this big here, how big is the next one ten meters back? If one person's head sits at this height against the horizon, how tall is someone standing farther away? Keep those relationships consistent across the scene so the depth feels solid.
Why it matters
Without this, scenes feel flat or warped: figures look like cutouts pasted onto the background, and objects in back can become giants or toys. If things shrink too little as they recede, the space feels cramped; if they shrink too fast, it feels like a tunnel. Reliable depth and scale let you place anything anywhere in a scene and have it belong to the same space.
You can check it when
- ✓You can place several copies of a box or figure on a ground plane, each shrinking and rising toward the horizon in a controlled way as it recedes.
- ✓You can put two characters at different distances on the same floor so their sizes feel right relative to each other and the environment, not like giants or miniatures.
- ✓You can extend lines from an object to the vanishing point to find where a same-sized object would sit deeper in space, and your drawing matches that construction.
- ✓Your scenes with multiple depth layers (foreground, midground, background) read as one continuous space instead of three separate flat bands.
