Perspective grids

Laying down perspective grids with vanishing points and horizon lines to build accurate space before you draw the scene.

What it is

You start by setting up the scene's invisible scaffolding: horizon line, vanishing points, and guide lines that converge correctly. You decide where the viewer stands, place vanishing points, and pull straight lines from them to define floors, walls, and major edges.

You'll often draw a simple room, street, or building block-out as a grid of receding lines. Verticals stay vertical, horizontals tilt toward their vanishing points, and repeated elements (windows, tiles, stairs) get spaced using the grid instead of eyeballed. The grid lives on its own layer; you build objects on top of it.

Different setups need different grids: one vanishing point for looking straight down a hallway, two for a street corner or building corner, three for a dramatic up- or down-shot. The grid can be rough or tight, but every edge that should follow perspective uses it.

Why it matters

Without a solid grid, environments and props drift: floors feel like ramps, tables don't line up, buildings twist as they recede. Proportions can't repeat reliably across space, so every added detail amplifies the distortion. A clean grid fixes the geometry first, so you can spend your attention on design and lighting instead of fighting crooked space.
