Fundamentals: horizon line / eye level and vanishing points
The horizon line is your eye level. Vanishing points along it keep objects aligned and believable in perspective.
What it is
The horizon line is your eye level, extended across the page. Sit down and it drops; stand up and it rises. Anything at your eye level lines up with it: a person's eyes when you're face to face, or the tops of tables you're looking straight across.
Vanishing points are spots on (or off) the horizon line where parallel lines seem to converge. A row of tiles, the edges of a road, the tops and bottoms of windows — if they run in the same real-world direction, their drawn versions all aim toward the same vanishing point.
You decide where the viewer's eye level is, draw that horizon, and place vanishing points along it for the scene's main directions. As you construct boxes, buildings, or furniture, aim their receding edges toward the correct vanishing point instead of guessing angles by eye. Vanishing points can sit far off the page — use a ruler or improvised guides to keep everything aligned.
Why it matters
Without a clear eye level and vanishing points, perspective becomes guesswork: tables tilt like slides, floors don't match walls, and characters look pasted into backgrounds instead of standing on the same ground. Anchor everything to one horizon and shared vanishing points, and objects relate to each other and the viewer predictably. You control how high or low the viewer feels, and you can rotate or place forms in space without them quietly warping out of alignment.
You can check it when
- ✓You can look at a photo or life scene and point to where your eye level is, then roughly sketch a horizon line that matches it.
- ✓You can lay tracing paper (or a new layer) over a photo, extend its edges, and find the horizon line and vanishing points cluster in logical places instead of scattering randomly.
- ✓In your own perspective sketches, you can extend receding edges and they meet cleanly at shared vanishing points on or near a single horizon line.
- ✓You can change the viewer height on purpose — drawing the same simple scene from high, mid, and low eye levels — and the horizon and object proportions shift in a controlled, believable way.
