Freehand perspective
Keeping objects in believable perspective by eye, without tracing perfect 3D grids or tools.
What it is
Freehand perspective means placing boxes, buildings, props, and figures in space by eye, without a ruled grid, so they feel solid and aligned. You still think in terms of horizon line, vanishing points, and converging lines — you just sketch them loosely instead of drafting with a ruler.
In practice, you rough in a box with light lines, then nudge its angles until it sits naturally against the horizon — comparing edges, asking “is this tilt steeper than that one?” Repeat this to build tables, chairs, vehicles, or whole rooms from boxy masses that roughly share the same vanishing directions.
You lean on quick checks instead of exact math: sighting angles with your pencil, ghosting lines with your hand, and squinting to see whether edges seem to meet in the same area. The drawing stays a little imperfect, but consistent enough that the viewer believes the space.
Why it matters
Without freehand perspective, anything you draw off a strict grid or photo reference starts to warp: tabletops tilt, boxes twist, and characters slide off the floor. You end up either over-constructing every setup or guessing randomly. A solid freehand sense lets you sketch ideas and thumbnail scenes that already sit in space, then add cleaner construction only where you actually need it.

- ✓You can redraw a simple object, like a boxy chair or crate, from a nearby angle by eye and have it still feel solid and believable in perspective.
