What it is
Presentation means arranging and explaining your prop design so someone else can use it without you in the room. It's not one pretty angle — it's a sheet that shows the object from multiple views, calls out key details, and holds up through production.
A sheet usually includes one perspective view (a 3D-looking angle) that conveys the prop's feel, plus orthographic views — flat front/side/back/top — that show exact shapes and proportions without distortion. How many views you need depends on the design: a boxy crate needs fewer than a folding mech rifle.
Callouts are close-up drawings or notes pulled from the main views with arrows, explaining mechanisms, joints, patterns, labels, or anything unclear at a distance. Exploded views separate the parts slightly in space, like a technical manual, so construction is obvious.
Variations are grouped options on the same sheet or a companion one — different silhouettes, mechanisms, or detail passes on the same brief. The final sheet pulls it together: one page (or a tight set) showing the chosen design, all necessary angles, how it works, and key surface details, laid out cleanly enough that a modeler or prop maker can pick it up and build.
Why it matters
Without solid presentation, even a good prop idea dies in handoff. A single fancy angle hides shapes, so 3D artists guess and your design drifts. Missing orthos or unclear exploded views cause broken hinges, impossible assemblies, or ugly cheats in production. Sloppy or buried callouts lose small but important things — scale cues, material breaks, labels. A clean final sheet locks the design down: less back-and-forth, fewer mistakes, and more of what you designed ending up on screen or in-game.
You can check it when
- ✓You can produce a sheet with one perspective view and the orthographic views needed, all clearly describing the same object and proportions.
- ✓Your callouts, and exploded views when needed, remove questions: a modeler can see how parts move, open, or attach without asking you.
- ✓Your variations are labeled so it's obvious which is final and how it evolved from earlier options.
- ✓Your final sheet reads cleanly at a glance: consistent line weight, legible notes, logical layout, and no missing information from any build-critical angle.
