Believability (functional construction, scale, ergonomics)
You design props that could exist and be used: buildable, correctly scaled, and comfortable or operable for a person or creature.
What it is
You make sure your prop designs would make sense if someone had to build and use them: how big they are compared to a body, where hands go, where weight sits, how parts move, and how they'd be manufactured. The drawing can still look stylized or fantastical — the underlying logic just has to be grounded.
You constantly check your designs against a human (or creature) body. You rough in a figure next to a weapon, chair, or device to see if the handle is reachable, the buttons are thumb-accessible, the seat height fits bent knees, or a strap can go over a shoulder. You adjust proportions so a grip is hand-sized, a door is shoulder-width, and hinges, levers, and joints have room to rotate.
You think through physics and mechanics: heavy parts are supported, long thin pieces have bracing, moving parts don't intersect, and sharp or hot sections aren't where the user has to touch. For non-human users, you treat their anatomy with the same care: where a hoof, claw, or tentacle meets the object, how their range of motion shapes the design, and what "comfortable" or "usable" means for that body plan.
Why it matters
Without this, props look cool at a glance but fall apart the moment someone imagines using them: weapons too heavy to lift, chairs that can't be sat on, doors whose handles hit the frame, control panels hiding crucial buttons behind decorative plates. Viewers may not say what's wrong, but it reads as cheap or fake worldbuilding. Once believability is there, your props feel like real tools built by real people (or creatures), and other departments—modelers, animators, set builders—can build what you designed without reworking it.
You can check it when
- ✓You can drop a quick human (or creature) scale figure beside your prop and all grips, rests, and contact points line up with plausible joints and reach ranges.
- ✓You can explain, step by step, how someone would pick up, hold, operate, and put away your prop without hitting impossible movements or missing contact points.
- ✓Your designs show clear support and structure: heavy masses have believable supports, long spans have thickness or bracing, and moving parts have enough clearance to move.
- ✓You can hand your prop to a 3D artist knowing its handles, hinges, and proportions are already buildable and animatable as drawn.
