Plausibility (functional, structural; avoiding arbitrary detail)
Designing objects and scenes so they could actually exist and work, not random piles of nonfunctional detail.
What it is
Plausibility here means your designs look like they could stand, open, bend, support weight, be worn, be built, or be used. Even in a fantasy setting, the structure, joints, thickness, and weight distribution follow some kind of logic, not just style.
In practice, you ask where this attaches, how it opens, how it's held on, where the force goes, what happens if it moves. You design hinges, straps, seams, supports, access panels, and thicknesses that do the job, not just float or vanish behind smoke and trim.
You avoid “ornament as solution”: you don't hide every unclear area behind spikes, random plates, fabric folds, or glowing bits. Added detail should have a clear job (protection, grip, venting, movement allowance, housing a mechanism), or wait until the functional structure already reads as believable.
Why it matters
Without functional and structural plausibility, viewers feel something is “off” even if they can't say why. Armor looks unwearable, weapons look ungrippable, buildings look like they'd collapse, props can't be held the way characters hold them. The story loses weight: danger feels fake, scale feels rubbery, and no amount of rendering fixes the sense that the world wouldn't last a minute if real.
You can check it when
- ✓You can take any major part of your design and explain in one sentence what it does and how it's attached or supported.
- ✓Your belts, straps, joints, hinges, and grips line up with how a body would move and where force or weight would go, instead of clipping through things or floating.
- ✓If you remove surface decoration from a design (engraving, patterns, glowing lines), the underlying object still makes sense as something that could be built or worn.
- ✓When you compare your designs to real-world references (tools, machines, clothing, architecture), you can point to at least a few direct functional inspirations rather than only visual ones.
