What it is

"Sufficiently believable" means your materials sell the surface at a glance: metal reads as metal, fabric as fabric, skin as skin. They don't need to survive a close-up or real-time engine scrutiny — just enough clarity and consistency to paint over in 2D without constant fixes.

You block in the big reads: value range, color bias, glossiness, and reflection sharpness. Metal should reflect, plastic should have a softer shine, cloth shouldn't look oily, skin shouldn't be pure matte. Simple maps and sliders get you these broad qualities — skip the tiny surface details.

These materials inform design choices: how light moves through the scene, where specular highlights land, where edges feel worn or soft, how silhouettes read against the background. Drop a character or prop in, and you can already tell metal from rubber from leather from glass — your paintover becomes clarification, not rescue work.

Why it matters

If your base materials don't read, the 3D block-in lies to you: you'll paint lighting and edges onto a confusing foundation, and the final concept keeps unclear materials, wrong highlights, and a weak value structure. You'll repaint whole areas once you try to separate metal from plastic that looked identical on the gray model. Get the materials believable from the start, and the render gives you trustworthy information — your paintover can focus on design, not correction.
