Creating useful lighting passes for paint-over
Setting up and exporting 3D lighting passes that give you a clean base to paint over, instead of a messy render you fight against.
What it is
You use 3D lighting to give yourself a clean base to paint on, not a final image. That means deciding in advance what you need: a greyscale render for form, a separate shadow pass, or a specular/highlight pass for materials.
In practice: a simple, well-lit scene with flat or neutral materials, no heavy post effects, and clean separation of elements. You generate a few clear passes — diffuse/base light, shadows, reflections, ID masks, sometimes depth — that stack and adjust quickly in your paint software.
You also control resolution, camera, and render quality so passes are crisp but light enough to work with. Avoid noise, over-contrasty renders, and baked-in color casts, and name and organize passes so dropping them into your paint file is painless.
Why it matters
Without useful passes, your 3D base fights you: overcooked renders with heavy post, lens flares, or baked-in color casts lock you into decisions that are hard to undo. Missing passes force you to re-light by hand over muddy values, and noisy, low-res output blurs edges and forms. Clean passes let you spend your effort on painting, not on wrestling a cluttered render into shape.
