What it is
Paint-over means taking a 3D render into your painting software and repainting on top of it, not just nudging colors. You use the render for perspective, lighting cues, and basic forms, then make deliberate changes: reshaping silhouettes, adding or cutting out parts, and simplifying or pushing details.
You break the clean, uniform look most 3D renders have by losing or softening perfect gradients, clone-stamped materials, and procedural noise. You repaint edges, group values, and adjust shapes so the image supports your focal points. If a wall is too busy, you paint it flatter. If a key shape is boring, you redesign it directly in paint, using the render only as a loose guide.
You also correct materials and lighting by hand. Metal that came out like gray plastic gets sharper specular highlights and clearer reflections in paint. Skin or cloth that looks waxy gets repainted with proper texture and value structure. You shift light direction, deepen shadows, add bounce light, or paint in new light sources if the render doesn't give you what the composition needs.
Why it matters
Without paint-over, your work tends to look like an overpainted screenshot: stiff, evenly detailed, and full of small 3D quirks that kill mood and style. The camera might be right, but forms stay generic, materials all share the same CG sheen, and lighting feels locked to whatever the render gave you. Paint-over lets you treat the 3D pass as a starting point, not a cage: you can push design, clarify hierarchy, and bring every surface and light cue in line with the story and style of the piece, so the final feels like one intentional painting instead of a composite of software defaults.
You can check it when
