Concept-appropriate judgment (topology fit for purpose; knowing when a model is detailed enough for paint-over)
Judging when a 3D model’s form and topology are sufficient for its concept-art job, so you stop modeling at the right time and move to paint-over.
What it is
You're not building production-ready models — just enough 3D structure to solve drawing problems: perspective, proportion, composition, lighting, and basic design. How clean and detailed the mesh needs to be depends on how close it sits to camera, how much you'll paint over, and what you still need 3D to clarify.
You choose the modeling level per task. A distant city block might be a few beveled boxes with kitbashed details, since you'll paint most of the texture and small shapes. A hero vehicle filling the frame needs careful edge flow and secondary forms, since you'll reuse its angles and lighting and can't fake that with brushwork.
Topology judgment shows up as intentional shortcuts. A cylinder can stay low-poly when you only need a correct silhouette, but needs extra loops to hold a crisp highlight or survive a close-up. You spend cleanup time only where it matters, accepting “ugly but stable” mesh elsewhere, because you know what will actually show after paint-over and rendering.
Why it matters
Without this judgment, you either overbuild or underbuild. Overbuilding wastes hours polishing topology and detail that vanishes once you paint, killing iteration speed. Underbuilding leaves you with lumpy silhouettes, lighting artifacts, or shapes that fall apart under paint, forcing last-minute fixes in 2D. Get it right and your 3D stays a fast tool: clean enough to trust for perspective and light, rough enough to throw away and try again without hesitation.

- ✓You can stop modeling a prop or environment, render it, and finish it in paint without wishing you'd added more geometry.
- ✓Your models hold up where it counts: silhouettes read clearly at their intended size, key edges catch light correctly, and messy topology sits only where you know you'll obscure or repaint it.
- ✓You rarely reopen 3D during paint-over for “just one more” fix — most returns are for real design changes, not missing basics.
