Procedural materials and material libraries
Setting up reusable, tweakable material presets so you can quickly dress 3D models with consistent, believable surfaces for paintover work.
What it is
This means using node-based or layer-based material systems to build materials driven by parameters instead of baked, one-off textures. You set sliders and switches for color, roughness, edge wear, or pattern density, so one material covers many variations without starting from scratch.
You build a few core procedural materials — metals, plastics, fabrics, stone, skin, glass — that respond well to changes in scale, UVs, and lighting. You rely on noise, gradients, masks, and generators for dust, scratches, edge highlights, and color variation more than hand-painting every detail, so each material still works when wrapped around different models.
A material library is your organized set of these presets, named clearly and tagged by use (“dirty industrial metal”, “matte concept plastic”, “wet rock”) so they stay consistent across projects. When blocking a scene for paintover, you assign materials, tweak a few controls, and get a render that already hints at surface and lighting.
Why it matters
Without a library, every new prop or environment costs time: you keep rebuilding the same metals, plastics, and fabrics, or settle for flat, generic shaders that say nothing about light or material. Renders end up too clean and CG-looking, or full of mismatched surfaces — making paintover harder, not easier. A small, well-built library gives you speed, consistency, and believable starting points, so your 2D effort goes into design and storytelling instead of fixing materials from scratch.
