What it is

PBR channels are separate grayscale or color images that each describe one physical property of a surface. Most tools plug them into fixed sockets: base color (albedo), roughness, metallic, normal or bump, opacity or transmission, and emission. You paint or generate each one on purpose instead of relying on a single diffuse texture.

Base color is the object’s true color without lighting painted into it — no fake highlights, no fake shadows. Roughness controls how sharp or blurry reflections are: low roughness is mirror‑like and shiny; high roughness is matte and diffuse. Metallic says which parts behave like metal (reflective, colored by reflection) and which parts are non‑metals (plastic, paint, skin).

Normal or bump maps add small‑scale surface detail without changing the mesh. Scratches, seams, pores, panel lines, and dents live here, catching light in a believable way. Transparency or opacity maps decide which pixels are see‑through or solid, often with gradients for glass, plastic, or thin cloth. Emission marks areas that glow on their own, like LEDs, screens, or magic runes, so they stay bright even in shadow.

In your 2D workflow, these channels let you set up a material once, then change lighting and cameras without repainting everything. A metallic robot with proper roughness and normals still looks like metal when you spin the light around or drop it into a darker scene.

Why it matters

Without control over PBR channels, your 3D bases look flat, plasticky, or inconsistent between shots. You get blown‑out highlights on things that should be matte, metals that look like gray plastic, or glowing parts that die the moment you darken the scene. That forces you to fix every render in paint instead of letting lighting and materials do the work. Once you understand what each channel does, your materials behave predictably, you can light and relight scenes quickly, and your 2D paintover is about design and polish instead of rescuing broken surfaces.
