Using real-time and path-traced renderers to generate lighting, materials, and reference images you can reliably paint over or trace from.

What it is

Renderers are the part of your 3D software that turns your scene into an image. Real‑time engines like Eevee show you an almost-final result instantly, good enough to judge composition, lighting, and materials. Path tracers like Cycles calculate light more accurately but take longer to render; you use them when you need believable light, reflections, and contact shadows for paint‑overs.

You might block out a scene in Eevee to quickly move cameras, adjust poses, and test lighting directions, then switch to Cycles for a slower, higher‑quality render once the scene is locked. For simple hard‑surface forms, flat lighting, or cartoony looks, you may stay in Eevee the whole way, tuning its settings until it gives you a stable base to paint on.

In Eevee, you know how to get usable shadows, reflections, and ambient light without the scene looking “gamey” or inconsistent. In Cycles, you balance noise, render time, and light quality so the result is clean enough to use as reference, without waiting all night for a frame you’ll paint over anyway.

Why it matters

Without control over renderers, you either waste hours on noisy, slow renders you can’t comfortably paint on, or you rely on fast previews that give misleading light and shadow. That leads to paint‑overs where forms don’t match the light, reflections feel made‑up, and your 3D base stops being trustworthy. Choosing the right renderer and getting it to a clean, believable state is what makes 3D support save time instead of creating new problems to fix in 2D.
