Matte/rough vs. glossy/polished
Telling rough, matte surfaces from glossy, polished ones in how they take light, show highlights, and reflect their surroundings.
What it is
Surface roughness controls how light behaves. A rough, matte surface scatters light in many directions, so it looks soft, low-contrast, and keeps a broad, gentle highlight. A glossy, polished surface keeps light tightly focused, showing small, sharp, bright highlights and clearer reflections of its environment.
You don’t paint a default highlight on everything. A matte hoodie, rough stone, or unpolished clay may have barely-there highlights that spread over a large area and sit close in value to the base color. A polished boot, ceramic mug, or lacquered table has tight, high-contrast highlights that jump almost to pure light and sit in a consistent place relative to the light source.
You also adjust edge sharpness and texture. Matte surfaces have softer transitions between light and shadow, and surface texture stays visible even in lit areas. Glossy surfaces keep sharper light–shadow edges, and their specular highlights can override local texture, almost "washing it out" where the light hits hardest. The same base material can look cheap and chalky, or sleek and polished, depending on how tightly you control those highlights and transitions.
Why it matters
Without this distinction, everything in your scene shares the same plastic, mid-gloss look. Leather and skin, stone and metal, rubber and ceramic blur together because they share the same highlight shape, size, and strength. Forms become harder to read because the viewer can’t tell what’s soft and grippy from what’s slick and mirror-like. Once you separate matte from glossy behavior, material identity snaps into place, lighting feels more believable, and you can direct the eye by choosing which surfaces catch sharp light and which stay quiet.

- ✓You can take one simple shape (like a sphere or cube) and convincingly paint it both as chalky/matte and as polished/glossy without changing the base color.

- ✓Your glossy materials show crisp, high-contrast highlights that follow the form consistently and don’t float or smear across the surface.
