Separating and controlling the lit side of a form — halftones, highlights, speculars, reflected light, and the terminator.
What it is
The light family is everything on the lit side of a form, up to where it turns into shadow. Inside that strip you can name and control five zones: halftones, highlights, speculars, reflected light, and the terminator — the border where light stops reaching the form.
Halftones are the main body of the lit side, sitting between the highlight and the terminator — the broad, gently graded values that describe a form's roundness. Highlights are the brightest point on a matte surface, where it faces the light most directly. Speculars are the sharp, mirror-like hits of the light source on shiny materials — they sit on top of the local color and can jump in value and color temperature compared to everything around them.
Reflected light on the lit side is light bouncing back from nearby surfaces, often visible on planes that turn slightly away from the light but aren't yet in full shadow. On rounded forms, the terminator appears as a band where halftones roll into the core shadow, rather than a hard line. Managing them means choosing where each zone lives, how big it is, and how sharply it transitions, instead of smearing the lit side into one vague bright area.
Why it matters
Treat the whole lit side as a flat "light" blob with one random bright dot, and forms look airbrushed, plastic, or unreadable: faces turn shiny for no reason, metal looks like dull clay, and nothing explains the light's direction or quality. Misplaced highlights fight the form, speculars on matte materials break material cues, and reflected light that's too bright confuses the form's edge. Separate the zones instead, and your lit areas do real work — describing volume, material, and light direction at once, so the render looks intentional rather than accidental.
You can check it when
- ✓You can paint a simple lit object and point to which strokes are halftone, highlight, or specular, and where the terminator sits.
- ✓Your highlights and speculars sit only on planes that face the light, and match the material (broad and soft on skin, sharper on plastic, very sharp on metal).
- ✓Your lit side has structure: halftones, highlights, and reflected light step down in value logically, instead of one flat light patch with a random white spot.
- ✓When you change the light direction in a study, the whole light family (halftones, highlight shape, specular placement, terminator position) rotates correctly around the form.
