Adding believable rust, dirt, dust, and scratches that match the form, material, and history of an object.

What it is

Weathering makes objects look used, exposed, and imperfect: rust on steel, grime in creases, dust on flat tops, micro-scratches on glossy parts. You decide where these build up in the real world, instead of sprinkling texture everywhere.

The logic: rust forms where bare metal stays damp or chipped, not in neat outlines. Dust settles on horizontal planes and softens contrast. Hand-worn areas turn smoother and lighter, not dirtier. Scratches follow the direction the object is handled or moves. Paint these as clear value and color shapes, not a noisy overlay.

Weathering also stays tied to form and lighting: scratches curve with the surface, rust follows seams and bolts, grime sits in occlusion areas where light barely reaches. Highlights still belong to the base material — a scratched metal edge still shines like metal, just broken up by thin dark lines and value jumps.

Why it matters

Without controlled weathering, objects either look like untouched 3D primitives or like they were rolled in a generic texture brush. Surfaces stop telling a story: you can't tell which parts are handled, exposed to rain, or newly replaced. Overdone or random weathering flattens form, confuses material reads, and fights the lighting. Consistent, physically grounded wear makes props and environments feel used, placed in a world, and easier to read at a glance.
