Surface story (materials, wear and history, cultural language)
Designing props so their materials, wear, and cultural cues tell you what they are, how they’re used, and where they come from.
What it is
Surface story is the information on a prop’s outer skin: materials, finish, wear, repairs, markings, and symbols. A metal kettle isn’t just “grey”; it might be cheap tin with dents, scorched at the base, with a polished handle from years of use. These are storytelling choices, not random texture.
You decide what the object is made of (metal, wood, plastic, fabric, glass), then how that material behaves over time. Soft plastic creases and scuffs; hardwood chips at edges and picks up oil where hands grip it; painted metal flakes at corners and rusts where water sits. You place scratches, stains, and grime where they build up: hinges, seams, handles, impact zones, and resting points.
Culture and ownership live on the surface too. A tool from a militaristic empire might have strict insignia, stamped serial numbers, and uniform paint. The same tool from a scrappy rebel group might show mismatched parts, hand-painted symbols, wrapped tape, and charms. Pattern, color, symbols, and ornament say who made it, who values it, and how it fits into the world.
In practice, you’re always asking: who owns this, how long have they had it, how do they treat it, and what culture shaped it? Then you bake those answers into visible surface choices instead of leaving the prop as a clean, generic model with random grunge brushed on.
Why it matters
Without a clear surface story, props collapse into a flat category: “metal thing”, “wooden thing”, “sci-fi gun”. They don’t feel owned, used, or grounded in any culture, and they blur together on screen. Random scratches and dirt hurt clarity: they distract the eye while saying nothing specific about how the object works or who it belongs to. With a deliberate surface story, you can tell at a glance which item is treasured, which is disposable, which faction it belongs to, and which era or tech level it comes from. That layer of information is what lets props support narrative and worldbuilding instead of just filling space.
You can check it when
- ✓You can point to each area of wear, dirt, or damage on a prop and explain how it got there (what action caused it, and over how much time).
- ✓You can design the same base prop for two different factions or cultures and, just by changing surface treatment and markings, they feel clearly distinct.
- ✓Your materials read at a glance: metal looks like metal, plastic like plastic, wood like wood, even before color tweaks or effects, and their wear patterns match their material properties.
- ✓Your “hero” props look more specific and storied than background props, with surface decisions that reflect their importance and history rather than just extra noise.
