Wet surfaces

Painting water, wet skin, and slick surfaces so they look damp or soaked, not just shiny or darker.

What it is

Wet surfaces are about darker value, softened texture, and sharper, more mirror-like highlights on top. You are painting both the underlying material (skin, fabric, stone) and a thin water layer coating it.

In practice you separate: base material, darkening from moisture, and the specular layer — the shiny reflections from the water. Puddles on pavement follow the ground plane and reflect the sky and buildings; wet rocks keep their bumps and cracks, but those bumps catch small bright highlights where water pools; wet hair clumps into thicker strands with tiny bright hits where each bundle curves toward the light.

You also think about how water collects and breaks up. Edges, folds, and low spots stay wetter and glossier. Raised areas dry first and look more matte. Drips form stretched, gravity-aligned highlights with slightly distorted reflections. On skin, the wettest spots (sweat beads, water droplets) have tiny, very bright highlights with crisp edges, often double highlights from multiple light sources.

Why it matters

Without a clear idea of what “wet” actually changes, you get random white streaks, generic gloss, or a darker version of the dry material — surfaces that look plastic, oily, or dirty instead of soaked. If you understand how a water film darkens local color, simplifies small texture, and adds a thin reflective layer that follows form and gravity, you can make rain, sweat, showers, puddles, and shorelines believable and consistent across a whole scene.
