Fabrics and leather (cloth, satin/silk, denim, leather)

Rendering cloth and leather so they read as the right material: weight, stiffness, sheen, and how they fold, crease, and catch light.

What it is

All fabrics and leather share some basics, then split by type. Cloth folds, stretches, compresses, and stacks into layers; leather bends and wrinkles but holds more structure. You see where material is under tension, where it sags, and where it bunches at seams, joints, and contact points.

You group fabrics by weight and stiffness. Light, floppy cloth (t‑shirts, bedsheets) hangs in long, soft curves. Stiffer fabrics (denim, canvas, coats) break into simpler, blocky folds. Silk and satin are thin, tight, and slippery, so they cling close to the form beneath and swing between sharp highlights and deep shadows. Leather behaves like a thick skin: broad, smooth areas with sharp stress wrinkles near bends and softer creasing where it compresses.

When you render, you match the material to the right value range and highlight shape. Matte cloth (t‑shirts, hoodies, denim) has soft, low-contrast shading and blurry highlights, if any. Satin and silk show high contrast, with bright, thin specular bands that follow the fold lines. Leather lands in the middle: a clear but not mirror-bright sheen on raised areas and edges, with tiny texture and subtle color shifts in worn zones, seams, and stretched panels.

Why it matters

Without solid fabric and leather rendering, folds float with no sense of weight, leather reads as plastic, and silk looks like flat foil — every material collapses into the same generic rubbery stuff. Characters feel like paper dolls when clothing doesn't suggest thickness, weight, or grip on the body. Get this right and you can sell costume design, set dressing, and worldbuilding with surfaces that support the character instead of distracting from them.
