Fabric properties (thickness, stiffness)

You judge how thick or stiff a fabric is, then let that choice control how it folds, hangs, and reacts to gravity and the body.

What it is

Fabric properties are cloth's physical traits: how thick it is and how stiff or floppy. These show up in edge behavior, fold size, and how closely cloth hugs the body. A stiff denim jacket forms broad, simple bends and keeps its own shape; a thin silk blouse clings, twists, and breaks into many tiny folds.

When you draw clothing on a figure, thickness shows in the bulk of seams, hems, and overlaps. Padded coats sit off the body and round out corners; a thin T-shirt shows the collarbone and shoulder landmarks, creating only a small lip at the hem. Stiffness shows in how sharply fabric can bend: cardboard-like canvas makes straight, flat planes between folds; soft knits and jerseys sag and curve around every contour.

You use these properties to decide what kinds of folds can exist on a garment, and how they connect. The same pose in wool suiting will have a few long, steady tension folds, while in light cotton you'll add secondary ripples branching off the main folds. Cuffs, collars, waistbands, and gathered areas advertise fabric thickness and stiffness through how far they stand out, how crisp their edges are, and how clean or messy the fold pattern is.

Why it matters

Without a clear sense of thickness and stiffness, all fabrics collapse into the same generic drapery: jeans that behave like tissue, coats that cling like spandex, skirts that hang like cardboard. The clothing stops supporting the figure drawing because the viewer can't tell what anything is made of, how heavy it feels, or how it should move. Get these properties right and you can suggest weight, warmth, restriction, and style just through how cloth holds or loses its shape around the body.
