Contour and cross-contour drawing
Lines that run across and around a form to show its 3D direction, volume, and twists.
What it is
Contour drawing follows the visible edge of a form with a line: where an object meets the background, or where one form overlaps another. Clean contour work gives you believable outlines — a jaw that wraps around a skull, a finger that sits in front of a palm, a branch that crosses a trunk instead of melting into it.
Cross-contour drawing places lines across the surface of a form, not along its edge — like the stripes on a zebra or the rings in a tree trunk, bands that wrap around in space and show how the surface turns, tilts, and bulges. In practice, you add curved lines that follow the form's 3D flow, the way latitude lines wrap a globe.
You use contour and cross-contour together to build solid forms before shading. A leg might start as a contour outline, then get cross-contour bands at the knee, calf, and ankle to show how each section faces in space. On a face, light cross-contour guides across the eye sockets, cheekbones, and mouth direction keep later shading and detail anchored to the skull instead of sliding around on a flat mask.
Why it matters
Without clear contour, your drawing flattens: limbs look like cut-out stickers, edges wobble, and overlaps stop showing which form is in front. Without cross-contour, you can guess at volume but not control it: cylinders twist the wrong way, torsos look deflated, and shading has nothing to latch onto, so it turns into aimless smudging. Strong contour and cross-contour lines give you a wireframe of the form's 3D path, so every later decision — anatomy, clothing, lighting, texture — follows a solid structure instead of fighting a flat outline.
You can check it when
