Plane analysis and turning form with value
You see where a surface turns, then use clear value steps to describe each plane so forms feel solid and 3D.
What it is
Plane analysis breaks a complex object into simple flat faces, or planes, each facing a clear direction. Instead of seeing a cheek as one smooth blob, you see front, ¾, side, top, and bottom planes, each catching a different amount of light.
Turning form with value means assigning a value step to each plane based on how directly it faces the light, then softening or sharpening transitions where needed. A plane facing the light gets lighter, a side plane gets a midtone, a downward-facing plane drops into shadow — and the change between them is controlled, not guessed.
In practice, you often do a “faceted” pass first: block in chunky, planar values that look like low-poly 3D. Then refine — softening some transitions while keeping the underlying plane structure. The result reads as round and solid, with a clear, logical value map.
Why it matters
Without plane analysis, values drift instead of stepping cleanly from plane to plane, and forms look mushy, inflated, or dented in the wrong places. Faces go muddy, objects feel sticker-like, and rendering tweaks just add noise instead of fixing the shape. Clear planes give you a roadmap: you always know why a spot is lighter or darker, and your shading explains the 3D form instead of fighting it.
You can check it when
- ✓You can draw simple planes over a photo or your own painting — like a low-poly mesh — and your shading already lines up with them.
- ✓You can block in a head, figure, or prop with only 3–5 value steps per side (no blending) and it still reads as solid and turning in space.
- ✓Your value changes follow the underlying form (cheekbone to side of head, top of arm to side) instead of wandering randomly across the surface.
- ✓You can simplify a soft, organic object into clear plane groups before rendering, and your final smooth shading still feels supported by that structure.
