You know how columns, beams, arches, vaults, domes, and foundations work, so your buildings look like they could stand up.
What it is
You recognize a building's main load-bearing parts and use them on purpose: vertical supports (columns, piers, walls), horizontal supports (beams, slabs), and what they rest on (foundations). You don't add columns and beams as decoration — you decide what they hold up, how often they repeat, and where they land.
You treat arches, vaults, and domes as structural choices, not pretty curves. An arch spans an opening and pushes outward, needing something to resist that force; a vault is a long arch forming a ceiling; a dome is an arch spun in a circle. When you draw them, you show what catches their weight — buttresses, thick walls, or a ring of columns — not thin glass or nothing at all.
Foundations matter even when hidden. You show how a building meets the ground: stepped bases on slopes, thicker lower walls, visible plinths or platforms. You avoid massive upper volumes floating on tiny contact points, unless you're clearly doing sci-fi tech — and even then you hint at how it's supported.
Why it matters
Without this, your buildings quietly fall apart: roofs float with no support, arches hang in mid-air, domes sit on walls that couldn't take the load. Viewers feel something is off even if they can't name it, which pulls attention from character and story. Once you see columns, beams, arches, vaults, domes, and foundations as one load path from top to ground, you can push style and fantasy further while still feeling grounded.
You can check it when
- ✓You can sketch a cutaway or side view of any building you design, showing a clear load path down to the ground.
- ✓You can place an arch, vault, or dome with believable supports for its sideways and downward forces (buttresses, thick walls, a ring of columns).
- ✓Your heavy elements — towers, thick roofs, large domes — sit on supports that look proportionally capable, not spindly posts or bare glass, unless that contrast is a deliberate fantasy choice.
- ✓Looking back at your environments, you can explain what each visible column, beam, and thick wall is doing structurally, not just aesthetically.
