An object's own lightness vs. the light falling on it (a white shirt in shadow is still white)
A white shirt in shadow is still white — separating an object's own lightness from the light hitting it, so both show up correctly in your values.
What it is
Every surface has an inherent lightness — its local value. A white shirt is light, charcoal is dark, regardless of lighting. Illumination is separate: how much light is actually reaching that surface right now.
You hold those two apart while you paint: the value you lay down is the object's own tone multiplied by the light hitting it. A white shirt in shadow can end up darker than a black shirt in direct sun — both still read as their true materials.
Why it matters
Confusing the two is a common reason paintings stop reading. Paint shadows as "the object got darker" and lit areas as "the object got lighter," and the shirt stops looking white — it looks dirty. Hold local value steady under changing light, and objects keep their identity, so lighting can do its real job: describing form and mood instead of repainting the materials.
You can check it when
- ✓You can look at any part of a reference and tell whether it's dark because of the material or because of the light.
- ✓You can paint the same object under two different lighting setups and it still reads as the same material in both.
- ✓Your shadow-side values stay consistent with the object's local value instead of collapsing toward a generic dark.
