Local color under light and shadow
Keeping an object's base color stable as light and shadow shift it, so it still reads as the same thing.
What it is
Every object has a base color — its local color. A red apple is red, a yellow raincoat is yellow. Light and shadow do not replace that color; they push it warmer, cooler, duller, or more intense, but it should still read as the same object throughout.
This skill is painting those shifts without losing the color's identity. In light, local color tilts toward the light source hue; in shadow, it usually cools or warms the other way and drops in saturation — but it never turns into a different color entirely. A blue mug in orange light is still the same blue mug, just influenced by that orange.
In practice, ask: what's the local color, what's the light color, what's the shadow color, and how do they mix? You end up with a light-side range and a shadow-side range per object — variations of the same base, not random colors stuck on top.
Why it matters
When local color falls apart under light and shadow, objects stop feeling solid: sunlit areas can look like they belong to one item and the shadows to another, faces shift to mud or sunburn instead of skin, and clothing changes color fold to fold. Viewers may not know why, but the image reads as off or cartoony. Keep local color stable and your scenes stay unified and believable, and you can push lighting and color mood further without breaking the subject.

- ✓You can paint a simple object — a fruit, a toy — lit from different angles, and it still reads as the same color every time.
- ✓Your lit and shadow areas feel like variations of one base color family per object, not random jumps in hue or saturation between planes.
- ✓When you study from photos, you can name the local color, describe how light and shadow shifted it, and match those shifts in a paintover.
- ✓In your own work, clothing, skin, and props don't mysteriously change color between light and shadow — they read as the same thing moving through different lighting.
