Rim light and backlighting; top lighting; underlighting
Placing rim light, top light, and underlighting so forms read clearly and materials stay believable from unconventional angles.
What it is
Three lighting setups: light from behind (rim/backlight), light from directly above (top light), and light from below (underlighting). In each, you decide where planes catch light, where they fall into shadow, and how strong the contrast is so the subject still reads as solid and three-dimensional.
With rim light and backlighting, most of the subject stays in shadow while a thin strip or halo of light runs along the edge facing the light source. You choose which contours face the light, how wide the rim gets as forms turn, and how sharp it is on different materials (soft on cloth, sharp on metal). You also decide how much backlight bleeds into translucent areas like ears, hair, or smoke.
With top lighting, you put light mostly on upward-facing planes: shoulders, cheekbones, the bridge of the nose, head planes, tops of props and scenery. Everything turning downward falls into deeper shadow. You manage how quickly faces fall off into shadow, how much the eye sockets sink, and how much bounce light keeps them readable instead of hollow.
With underlighting, you flip your usual instincts: planes that normally sit in shadow (under the chin, nose, brows) now catch the strongest light. You choose which surfaces face the low light source, how much that light wraps around forms, and how dark the top planes stay. The mood shifts without losing structure — the subject still reads as the same person or object, just dramatically lit.
Why it matters
These setups are where structure often breaks. Without control, rim light becomes a random outline stickered around the figure, top light crushes eyes and mouths into muddy holes, and underlighting turns into a spooky flashlight trope where features float without convincing forms. Once you can run rim, top, and underlighting on the same head or object and keep it solid, you gain reliable control over drama and mood without sacrificing clarity or believability.
You can check it when
- ✓You can take a simple 3D form (sphere, cube, cylinder) and convincingly light it from behind, above, and below, with the lit planes shifting logically each time.
- ✓You can paint a character’s head with rim light only and it still reads as a solid head, not just a silhouette with a neon outline.
- ✓Your top‑lit faces keep key features readable (eyes, mouth, nose) without flattening them into a mask of shadow.
