What it is
This skill is shading the basic 3D shapes — box, sphere, cylinder, cone — so they feel solid and lit, not like flat stickers. You place light and shadow on each primitive so its direction, curvature, and orientation are obvious at a glance.
This shows up when you block in a character, prop, or environment as simple forms first, then render those forms cleanly before adding detail. You can paint a cylinder arm, a boxy torso, a spherical head, and a conical hat so they all share one consistent light source and sit in the same world.
It also covers combining primitives into complex volumes: a mech of boxes and cylinders, a coffee maker of rounded boxes and tubes, a creature whose muscles simplify into spheres and sausages. You can move from a construction sketch to a rendered pass where every joined form still reads, with clear overlaps and believable light falloff.
Why it matters
Without this, your lighting notes and edge work have nothing to sit on: objects look pasted-on or “mushy,” disconnected from the underlying 3D shapes. Limbs collapse into noodles, hard-surface props lose their structure, and no amount of surface detail fixes a form that never felt solid. Once you can render simple and combined forms reliably, everything you paint — from faces to architecture — gains weight, volume, and a consistent light direction.
