Line control
Placing clean, accurate lines on purpose, with control over pressure, direction, and flow in straights, curves, and ellipses.
What it is
Line control means putting a mark exactly where you intend, with the pressure and direction you want. In practice: construction lines that are steady instead of fuzzy, straight edges that don't wobble, and curves that don't bulge or flatten by accident.
Day to day, this shows up in the "boring" structure work: blocking in a box with clear, single strokes instead of hairy, repeated scratching; turning a cylinder with smooth, even arcs; dropping a center line across a head in one confident motion instead of many corrections.
Ellipses — circles seen in perspective — are the stress test of your line control. You use them to build wheels, eyes, joints, cups, shoulders. Good line control lets you spin an ellipse that's smooth, closed, and aligned to the right perspective, instead of lopsided or broken into short segments.
Why it matters
Without line control, construction drawing falls apart: wobbly straights and uneven curves make boxes twist, cylinders kink, and ellipses point the wrong way in space. The viewer reads these mistakes as warped form, even when your idea was correct. Clean, deliberate strokes keep forms legible and perspective believable — and free your attention for design instead of constant line-fixing.
You can check it when
- ✓You can draw a straight line between two points in one motion, with only minor wobble, and usually hit both endpoints without needing to "feather" or restate it.
- ✓Your curves and S-curves feel smooth and intentional when you zoom out; they don't have random flat spots, bulges, or kinks where your hand changed speed or direction.
- ✓You can draw ellipses that are closed and smooth, not egg-shaped, and tilt them to match the perspective of boxes and cylinders you've already drawn.
- ✓Your construction drawings stay readable at a small size because forms are described with a few clear strokes, not a nest of short, scratchy lines.
