Translating 2D shapes into believable 3D forms
Turning a flat shape into a solid form you can rotate in your head and on the page.
What it is
You look at a flat photo or scene, read the outline, then work out what solid object it would be in space. Instead of copying the silhouette, you think: box-like form, bending cylinder, sphere with a wedge cut out.
You redraw what you see as if you could grab and rotate it: placing visible and hidden edges, showing which planes face up, down, or sideways, wrapping contour lines around surfaces, and using overlaps to show what sits in front. The result should hold up from another camera angle, not just the one you drew.
Simple perspective rules back this up: parallel edges converge, circles become ellipses, thickness is drawn rather than implied. A flat shield becomes a disc with a rim and side planes; an arm is not one tube outline but a set of turning volumes whose cross-section you could draw at any point along its length.
Why it matters
If you stay at the level of 2D shapes, your drawings fall apart the moment you change the angle, bend a limb, or light the scene: foreshortened parts look rubbery, faces warp as they turn, and props read as cardboard cutouts. Once you can reliably turn shapes into volumes, your drawings become poseable and lightable — proportions check out in depth, distortions are easier to catch, and small changes in camera or pose no longer mean redrawing from scratch.
You can check it when
- ✓You can take a flat reference photo and sketch it from a few different angles without it collapsing or turning into a different object.
- ✓Your forms feel like they have thickness — sides, rims, and overlaps show, instead of everything reading like a flat sticker on the page.
- ✓You can add contour lines around limbs, cylinders, and heads that follow a consistent direction in space, instead of sliding off or fighting the perspective.
- ✓Your foreshortened objects and limbs look solid rather than stretched or squashed; you can tell which end is closer to the viewer at a glance.
