Designing believable natural landscapes: terrain, rocks, water, and vegetation that feel structurally sound and belong to the same world.
What it is
You invent and arrange natural terrain that feels like a real place: hills, cliffs, valleys, coasts, rivers, and shorelines with clear underlying structure. Slopes drain water somewhere, cliffs show layers and breaks, erosion has a direction, and the landforms reveal paths of least resistance.
Rocks and geology follow simple, repeatable rules, not random blobs. You think in planes, fractures, and layering: sedimentary rock shows stacked slabs and break lines, volcanic rock is chunkier and more irregular, boulders collect at cliff bases, and scree (loose rock piles) gathers where gravity would dump it. You use these patterns to design distinct locations and biomes.
You place and shape water so it respects gravity and terrain. Rivers widen and slow as they go downhill, meander on flat land, and cut sharply into slopes; waterfalls need a drop and a water source; lakes settle in basins. On the surface, waves, ripples, reflections, and shore transitions shift with depth, wind, and scale — not a flat blue fill.
Vegetation feels constructed, not stamped on. You build trees from trunk to big branches to small branches to foliage masses, with clear growth direction and weight. Bushes, grasses, and ground cover group in logical clumps — more where there's water and soil, less on bare rock and steep slopes. Plant types match the climate and altitude your terrain implies, repeated and varied like a real ecosystem.
In production, this shows up as location concepts, biome sheets, and callouts for specific features: a canyon entrance, a forest clearing, a mountain pass, a tidal cave. You iterate designs that feel fresh but stay grounded, and keep terrain, rock language, and plant types consistent across views and shots.
Why it matters
Without this, your natural scenes collapse into generic “fantasy background” noise: rocks like lumpy potatoes, trees like cotton balls on sticks, water like flat blue gradients, terrain like random bumps with no sense of slope or drainage. Characters feel pasted onto backdrops instead of standing in a place that could shape how they move, hide, travel, or build. When your natural environments are structurally sound, everything else — lighting, mood, storytelling, architecture — has a believable stage to sit on, and you can reuse and extend locations across a project without them contradicting each other shot to shot.
You can check it when
- ✓You can sketch a small map or cross-section of your scene and show where water would flow, pool, or erode the land over time.
- ✓Your rocks and cliffs show consistent fracture directions, layering, and planes — the same “rock logic” repeats across pieces in the same region.
- ✓Your trees and plants are built from clear branch structures and foliage masses, not single scribbled outlines — different species read apart in silhouette.
- ✓When you redesign a location from another angle, the terrain, rock types, and vegetation still read as the same place, not a new random landscape.
