Quadruped foundation (skeleton, major muscle groups)
The bone and muscle layout of four-legged animals, so you can build solid, believable bodies before adding species detail.
What it is
You can sketch a four-legged animal's skeleton in simple forms: skull, spine, ribcage, pelvis, and the four limb chains with their major joints. You don't need every bone — just where the neck meets the ribcage, how long the back is, where the hip sits, and how the legs hinge.
You also know the muscle masses that show on the surface: shoulder and hip, thigh and upper arm, the muscles along the spine, the belly, and the forms around the knee, elbow, and hock (rear ankle). You can tell which bumps and planes in the silhouette are bone, which are muscle, and which are fat or skin.
In practice, you lightly block in a stick-figure skeleton and simple volumes (boxes, cylinders, eggs) before committing to contour. You can turn that structure in space or change the pose and keep joints in place and limb lengths believable — before deciding the species or costume.
Why it matters
Without this foundation, quadrupeds collapse into guesswork: backs come out too short or long, legs bend the wrong way, and joints float or vanish under fur and armor. A design might work from one angle but fall apart when turned, because there's no consistent structure underneath. With a clear map of bones and muscles, you can pose, foreshorten, or bulk up and slim down any four-legged body and still keep it weighty, balanced, and believable as a real creature.
