What it is
Animal movement is knowing how different bodies travel through space: how a dog walks versus runs, how a bird takes off, how a cat twists mid-jump. In practice, you can track which feet are on the ground, how the spine flexes, how the weight shifts, and where the balance line is at each moment.
Day to day, this means pages of fast gesture drawings from animal video or life, focused on line of action (the overall flow of the pose), weight, and timing rather than details. You draw many small studies — walk cycles, pounces, turns, landings — simplifying what you see into clear poses that still read as that species.
When designing creatures or story frames, you use this to pose animals so they look dynamic and believable. You pick key moments in an action — the push-off, the mid-air stretch, the landing brace — and make each read clearly. Even in a single still image, the viewer can tell where the animal came from and where it's going, because the motion is built into the pose.
Why it matters
Without a grasp of locomotion, animal drawings feel floaty, stiff, or confused: legs do impossible things, feet slide, and the body doesn't seem to carry weight. Animators and game teams can't build convincing movement from your designs, and story art loses impact when actions feel fake. Once you understand how animals move, your poses become clear and purposeful — even invented creatures feel grounded and usable in production.
