Comparative anatomy between species
How different species' bodies match and differ, so you can borrow, mix, and alter anatomy believably.
What it is
Comparative anatomy means looking at two or more species side by side to see what's the same and what changed in shape, size, or function. You look past fur, feathers, and skin to match bones and major muscles: this finger equals that toe, this bat wing equals that stretched hand, this horse leg is a human arm walking on one fingertip.
You line up references of different animals and trace over them to find shared landmarks: skull types, spine curves, ribcage shapes, shoulder and hip placement, limb segments, tail bases. Patterns emerge: predators share certain jaw and neck structures, hooved animals share a similar lower limb design, birds and dinosaurs share hip and leg solutions.
You use these comparisons as building blocks when designing creatures. You might give a dragon bat-like wings, feline shoulders, and deer hind legs, or push a dog's proportions toward a hyena while keeping the bone logic underneath. You're constantly asking: if I change this feature, what does it correspond to in real animals, and how would that affect the rest of the body?
Why it matters
Without comparative anatomy, creature design drifts into random shapes: limbs that can't move, joints bending the wrong way, heads the neck can't support, wings that can't attach to any believable shoulder. Viewers may not know which bone is wrong, but they feel the design is fake or flimsy. With it, you can exaggerate, hybridize, and stylize while keeping an internal logic, so your creatures feel like they could evolve, move, and survive in the real world.

- ✓You can redraw the same invented creature in different poses without guessing where elbows, knees, or wings attach, because you're following a real species' structure under the design.
