Tools (symmetry, remeshing)
Symmetry and remeshing let you sculpt cleanly instead of fighting the software.
What it is
Symmetry mirrors anything you do on one side of a model onto the other. You use it to block in heads, characters, props, and creatures that should be balanced left–right. You turn it off for asymmetrical features: bags under one eye, a broken horn, a lopsided satchel.
Remeshing rebuilds the model's surface so its polygons are more even — some tools call this dynamesh or remeshing to uniform density. You use it whenever your strokes start stretching, tearing, or clumping because you've pushed the surface too far. After remeshing, the mesh takes new forms and details cleanly instead of leaving jagged, stringy marks.
In practice: you block in a creature bust with symmetry on, push and pull until the base shape feels right, then remesh a few times as you inflate, cut, and smooth. As the forms settle, you toggle symmetry on and off — on for shared structures like the jaw or ribcage, off for one-off details like scars, pouches, or accessories.
Why it matters
Sculpting both sides by hand breaks the character's balance and makes changes slow and painful. Skipping remeshing lets your strokes skid across the surface and fine forms collapse. Control both on purpose and your sculpts stay clean and editable — ready for a new camera angle, a pushed pose, or a different lighting setup in your 2D painting.
You can check it when
- ✓You can toggle symmetry on and off without hunting through menus, and you know which axis you're mirroring across for heads, bodies, and props.
- ✓You can spot when stretched or broken polygons are causing ugly strokes, and you fix it with an appropriate remesh instead of fighting the mesh.
- ✓Your symmetrical designs stay symmetrical from any angle, with believable small asymmetries where you chose to break it.
- ✓You can take a rough blob and, through a few cycles of sculpt → remesh → refine, turn it into a clean maquette that lights and renders well for paint-over.
