Composition through the camera (depth staging)

Using a 3D camera lets you stage foreground, midground, and background so your scene reads depth and focus from the start.

What it is

You use the 3D camera to design depth, not just to frame a shot: what sits close, what sits in the middle, and what recedes into the distance. Place rough proxy geometry (boxes, cylinders, mannequins), then move the camera until the layers separate and lead the eye where you want.

Check overlaps and spacing in the camera view: foreground elements can break the frame edge, midground elements should overlap without swallowing the subject, and background shapes should sit behind everything without tangling the silhouette. Nudge objects in Z-depth (toward or away from camera), not just left-right, and watch how atmospheric perspective, scale, and occlusion build the sense of space.

Use the camera to test variations quickly: push the subject closer, add a foreground obstruction, lower the horizon so buildings loom, or open the midground for a cleaner read. The exported render is already depth-staged — you know where to push contrast, edges, and detail in paint because the 3D view already did that work structurally.

Why it matters

Without camera depth staging, 3D scenes read as flat plates: everything sits at similar size and distance, silhouettes merge, and the eye has no path into the image. You end up fighting the render in paint-over, inventing depth that contradicts the geometry. Stage depth in camera and perspective supports the composition instead of working against it — paint-over time goes into refinement, not rescue work.
