Head and neck construction
Building the head and neck from simple 3D forms so they sit correctly on the body, at any angle, with clear landmarks and volume.
What it is
You break the skull into simple solids: a ball for the cranium, a box or wedge for the face, cut planes for the sides, and a jaw hinged on the skull. You place the eye sockets, cheekbones, nose, and mouth using center lines and brow-nose-chin alignment, not by guessing from outlines.
You treat the neck as a real volume, not a stick: a tapered cylinder or box connecting skull to rib cage, with a clear tilt and thickness. You track the front column of the throat and the back column of the neck, and how both plug into the skull base and rib cage top.
In practice this means you can spin the head in space: up, down, turned, tilted, foreshortened. You keep track of the front plane, side planes, and under-planes of the head, and you wrap features (eyes, nose, mouth, ears) around that 3D form rather than pasting them flat on the surface.
You also relate the head and neck to the rest of the figure. The head sits on the spine, the neck follows the curve of the spine, and the skull lines up with the rib cage and shoulders in a believable way, even when the pose twists or bends.
Why it matters
Without solid head and neck construction, portraits drift off-model and heads look glued on. Tilts and turns become guesswork, features slide around the face, and the neck vanishes or turns into a flat tube that ignores the spine and rib cage. Good construction gives you a dependable 3D scaffold: likeness survives different angles, expressions sit on the bone structure, and the head feels locked onto the body instead of floating beside it.
You can check it when
- ✓You can draw a simple ball-and-wedge head with a jaw and neck from any angle without a reference, and it still feels solid and 3D.
- ✓You can tilt and turn a referenced head (for example, rotate it 30° more in your drawing) and all features and planes stay consistent with the skull form.
- ✓Your necks have believable thickness and attach cleanly into both the base of the skull and the top of the rib cage, matching the tilt of the spine and shoulders.
- ✓Your figure drawings no longer show heads that look pasted on; the angle of the head, neck, and rib cage all support the same gesture and perspective.
