Neck-to-torso muscles (neck, shoulders, chest, back, abdomen)

How the neck, shoulder, chest, back, and abdominal muscles wrap the ribcage and spine and become usable surface forms in your figures.

What it is

You'll know the main muscle groups connecting the head and torso, and how they sit on the ribcage and spine: the neck (sternocleidomastoid in front and side, rope-like muscles at the back), shoulder cap (deltoid), upper chest (pectoralis major), upper back (trapezius, visible lats), and the abdominal wall on the front of the body.

In practice, you can place these as clear shapes from any angle, not as random bumps. You know the sternocleidomastoid runs from behind the ear to the chest notch, the deltoid wraps from collarbone and shoulder blade into the upper arm, the chest muscle fans from breastbone and collarbone into the upper arm, and the abs stack over the front of pelvis and ribcage instead of floating on the belly.

You understand how these groups overlap and create landmarks: the collarbones sitting on top of the ribcage, the hollow at the base of the neck, the V where neck muscles meet the chest, the trapezius ridge from neck to shoulder, the shoulder blades moving under the back muscles, and how abdominal forms echo the tilt of the ribcage and pelvis. In your drawings, these are stable, believable structures, not guessed-in lines.

Why it matters

Without a map of these torso and neck muscles, figures look soft, rubbery, or generic.

Necks become simple tubes, shoulders turn into balls glued on the sides, chests look like flat slabs or random bumps, and backs lose the clear planes that show twist and bend.

Lighting won't fix this: if the forms are wrong or missing, your shadows only draw more attention to it.

Once you control these muscle groups, you can show strength, age, and tension with just a few planes, and your poses read clearly even in simple line or flat color.
