The three dimensions of color (hue, value, saturation/chroma)
Hue, value, and saturation are separate levers you control and combine when choosing or mixing color.
What it is
Color has three dimensions you can adjust: hue (the color family — red, blue, green), value (how light or dark it is), and saturation or chroma (how intense or gray it is). In real work you constantly decide which of these to move, and by how much, instead of just grabbing a nicer-looking blue from the color picker.
When matching a reference, you might hold the hue steady while nudging the value lighter, or lower the saturation without changing its lightness. When inventing color, you might vary value strongly while keeping saturation quiet, or push saturation in key areas while holding hue nearly constant. Each brushstroke is a choice along these three axes, not a random slide around the color wheel.
You also learn to read other people's paintings this way. Look at a character's jacket: the hue is close to the background, but the value is darker and the saturation is a bit higher — that's why it stands out without looking random. If something in your own work is popping too much, ask whether hue, value, or saturation is the real problem.
Why it matters
If you can't see hue, value, and saturation as separate, every color choice moves all three at once. Edges get muddy, forms flatten, and light stops reading correctly because vivid colors look deceptively light and dull colors look deceptively dark. Scenes drift into random rainbows or flat, dead palettes. Once you can control each dimension on its own, values stay organized, saturation stays purposeful, and color supports form, focus, and mood instead of fighting them.
